GENDER CHECKER

Magazine Advertisement and Photography

Using my own photography, I designed a magazine campaign that brought awareness to the bathroom bills and how they affected the transgender community. The laws stated for public restrooms people have to use the stalls that matched the gender on their birth certificate, not their gender identity. Both layouts where photoshoped together. The first advertisement depicts a machine stationed in front of the woman’s bathroom for users to swipe their birth certificate before peeing. The second shows a bouncer guarding the bathrooms, wearing a T-shirt with the words “Gender Checker” printed on it. To further state the ridiculous of this, the tagline at the bottom states “Isn’t this Ridiculous?” The photography was kept dual and dark, representing the horror of these laws. Using a high shutter speed and depth of field to capture the grunge and textures on the dirty bathroom doors to further the point and to hopefully change some minds.
